Spring is near Yeah the daylight appears I can feel it coming like a thrumming through my bones But now the nest is empty For she has up and left me A thousand miles away my little bird has flown Ooh but as the day breaks onto miles of frozen plain Sunlight is melting, honey And steaming up the rain I tried to call you across that vast and wild space But you did not get the call That don't bother me at all I'll just pick up from the root ball And I'm gonna see you again Snows again! They can’t keep me in Gonna dig a tunnel just like rabbits dig a hole That winter wind It makes a great coat thin But I've got heft and bark and warmth built up in store You told me that our bodies grow as one across the land When springtime hits the leafy meadow I'll wake up again Every time I get up in the night I know you do too That rope that's stretched so tight is pulling me on home to you And I know it's pulling you too Cause one and one is one, too So let's just see this thing through And I'm gonna see you again Tomorrow morning Is almost upon me The night is ending, we're upending winter's throne So come the spring And with it bring My little darling and the love that we have known Here you come to me across a lost and lonely plain Where men had built a house of me and priests invoked my name They labored in their love of me but I declare not in vain As springtime teaches, things that we thought gone right soon we'll gain My bird, your branches call A good oak warm and tall And out our bodies will crawl When I see you again Ba da ba ba bow

Summertime And it'll be better The weather's fine For a green sweater Ooh Winter's lines Etched hard upon your face The green lawns All marred by the rain Ooh

Lakewood 03:50
Lakewood lakewood won’t you be my friend Like your rivers I been a-twistin’ Don’t know where it starts, don’t know where it ends Lakewood Lakewood won’t you be my friend Walking down Detroit Avenue Looking for some thing to do None will meet my darkened glance A plastic bag blows against the fence Lakewood Lakewood won’t you be my friend Your gray gray skies seem to have no end My soul feels clipped, my heart feels bent Lakewood Lakewood won’t you be my friend The snow is falling all around my room The sun is down, it’ll be dark soon The windows show me what it’s like outside A rabbit finds a place to hide A dim-lit bar, a half-filled crowd A beer in hand, a quiet town A good friend’s waiting just out of sight Dust yourself off, go out tonight Take a step, then take one more Close the light, step out the door If you dare reach out your hand Lakewood Lakewood will be your friend Lakewood Lakewood won’t you be my friend Like your rivers I been a twistin’ Don’t know where it starts, don’t know where it ends Lakewood Lakewood won’t you be my friend

Why can I never talk straight to you? Why do I have to go round and about Finding myself at the place The place where I hoped to get out? What is it about your worry That never comforts or calms? It sends the demons to scurry and hurry Back into the wound it opens They talk of one little devil Who soon will multiply You send him out but the clever fellow Will find seven more of his kind So soon they know your defenses They know just how to break in But instead of making slick with the silver They’d rather make camp and dig in Oh they’d rather make camp and dig in Like those guys from Oregon They’d rather make camp and dig in

Oh take me back to the shoals of Nantucket Where the skies are sparklin’ And the sand is clean The beaches inviting me to spend the day there Nantucket, Nantucket Were you just a dream? Oh let me hear those ships’ bells at morning The mist slowly rising on a choppy sea The fog lightly lifting A Nantucket morning Nantucket, Nantucket Seems like a dream to me I want to run a ring round Water Street And ground my ship at your shores You've got that thing Makes my soul complete Oh Nantucket, you know I'm coming for more Oh take me back to a Madaket Sunset A sunrise in Sconset And Cisco by day How I love it To live life at leisure With every new treasure You bring my way Nantucket, Nantucket We'll meet again some day

NoBuddy 02:19
No I’ve got No buddy around No I’ve got No buddy around Listen can you hear it, tell me What’s that sound? The sound of No buddy around My buddy’s gone and left town My buddy’s gone and left town Now the only other sound is that lonesome sound
The sound of no buddy around (chorus) The coffee’s left unground The spool is left unwound The chair is like the dais of a king un-crowned Cause I’ve got No buddy around (chorus) It's quiet all around Quiet all over town Now there’s nothing left to do except to mope and frown Cause I've got No buddy around (chorus)

Yeah our backs are bent and broken We have tried so many times We’ve sought some kind of meaning in the grand design Now our hair is gone bedraggled And directionless our minds Can we even remember all the things we meant to find? Yeah our heads are feeling heavy And stubborn as the devil The body’s feeling ready for a change of heart So hold the handbrake steady Keep the path free for the shovel And move it on the double to these patient waiting arms I see it in the corner In the dust left by your shoes Hurry now, we’ve no time left to lose No time like the present For digging up the past Let's let bygones be bygones Let’s build it so it can last So come as soon as you are able We’ve a place set at the table It’s sturdy and it’s stable and it's made to hold you up It’ll take you when you’re ready Underdone or brimming plenty If you run your tank to empty I’ll be there to fill it up The days are getting colder But there’s warmth in here for you Hurry now, we’ve no time left to lose What good are all these past regrets? If you ask I won’t refuse Hurry now, we’ve no time left to lose Hurry now, we've no time left to lose

Someday Soon 02:43
I know my number’s gonna come up I know my dollar’s gonna drop My penny’s gonna sparkle from the wishing well I know my luck ain’t all run up I know it’ll happen for me some day soon Someday soon but when I cannot tell
Staring out my window At the man on the moon He changes his face every day Please, Mr. Moonlight I ask of you every night Can’t I change too? The way that you do? Show me the way I know my number’s gonna come up I know my dollar’s gonna drop I know gosh darn, it’ll happen for me some day soon I’ll change just like the winter moon When it'll happen I can't tell you But I know it’s coming someday soon

about

The album takes its name from a phenomenon well familiar to those who live in the towns and cities along the south shore of Lake Erie. The lake effect weather brings icy rain, gray skies, and general cold and dampness for much of the year. I think it's a charged metaphor, too. I wrote many of these songs while spending time in Cleveland, Ohio in 2018 and 2019, as I traced the contours of the lake on gray afternoons. In the cold Cleveland winters, I would stay indoors. I learned a measure of social isolation. The effect feels akin to our current circumstances, as we are separated by long distances and invisible barriers from our loved ones.

While I wrote some of these songs in Cleveland, I wrote others from 2013 up through the present. They all share a strand of the melancholy we all might feel from time to time, or can trace a line thematically to the others.

I hope you'll find something redemptive in these songs. Though they live in the gray, they search for the light, like the sun peeking through the mists on a glorious morning.

I recorded this album using either a Blue Snowball microphone or a Zoom h4n while self-isolating. Everything was mixed in garageband. So it was all done on the cheap, on the DIY. This isn't meant to be a finished product, so don't take it as such - but as a way to share some of my music. I look forward to the day when I can get into a studio with my friends and collaborators again. Till then, I'm enjoying learning more about recording at home, and hope to bring you more recordings soon. The album is free -- so feel free to download -- but if you want to drop a few bucks into the proverbial tip bucket, by all means, you shan't be opposed.
